Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
